RN Fellowship Program for Stamford Hospital Emergency Department
The objective of the ED Fellowship is to provide the minimally experienced nurse with an intensive introduction to ED nursing, exposing him or her to all aspects of caring for the emergent and urgent patient. This training program is comprised of several modules, both clinical and didactic, and includes short rotations to many key clinical departments as well as “field” experience with Stamford EMS.
Modules
I. Validation of basic nursing skills such as:
- UA; FSG; cardiac monitor lead placement; pulse ox; EKG; phlebotomy
II. Patient Care Unit Rotation
- Nurses will spend time on key units with which they are not familiar – this will be personalized to each nurse
III. Nursing care of the non-urgent, urgent and emergent patient
- Introduction to commonly used emergency medications
- Stamford Hospital ED competencies
- Psychiatric patient care
IV. Getting to know the ED players and systems
- Introduction to social work and case management in the ED
- Introduction to ED physician system
- Review of unit coordinator responsibilities
- Introduction to trauma
- Introduction to bed management coordination
- “Field” experience with Stamford EMS
V. Customer service in the ED
- Introduction to ED scripting
- Review of “Fish” video
VI. Practical orientation
- Cardiac emergencies - nurse assigned to cardiac room with preceptor
- Care of the trauma patient – nurse assigned to trauma room with preceptor
- General ED patient – Medical; Surgical; OB/GYN; Geriatric; Oncological and Pediatric patients
- General, including Psychiatric patient care
- Fast Track patient care – assigned to Fast Track with preceptor
- Immediate Care Center – assigned to ICC at Tully Health Center with preceptor
- Triage – assigned to Triage area with preceptor
- Charge orientation – assigned to charge position with preceptor (Charge Nurse)
